The first Indian female gynaecologist and fertility expert, Dr. Indira pioneered the Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer technology with the first GIFT baby birth on January 1988. She obtained her doctorate with a thesis titled “ Human in Vitro Fertilisation and Embryo transfer” from the Bombay University. It is know that she delivered the first Indian test tube baby at KEM hospital in 1986. She is renowned for developing Oocyte donation technique resulting with a successful child birth in 1991.
She expertises in both Male and female infertility and have successfully accomplished her research aims. Her ongoing projects are focused on male infertility with special regards to Y chromosomes in male.
She is currently still practicing in P.D. Hinduja Hospital, in Mumbai.
In 2011 she was awarded with India’s most prestigious award – Padma Shri award by the govt of India..
