Benefits of physical activity on mental health.
Exercise is generally regarded to be linked with only physical fitness. The main objective of the workout is to have an overall improved physique. Although the above can be achieved by a good physical workout, there are other benefits of doing physical activity.
It might come as a surprise to many that both physical health and mental health are interlinked. The human brain is the most powerful machine and it is responsible for affecting stress and thus the overall mood. When experiencing stress, Hypothalamus Pituitary Axis (HPA) is activated in the brain and starts promoting the release of cortisol, which is also known as the stress hormone.
As the cortisol levels increase the connections in the fear center which is the Amygdala increases and deteriorates electric signals in the hippocampus. This further leads to memory loss, lack of learning ability, and stress control.
Exercising increases the blood flow throughout the body including the brain. This results in the reduction of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. At the same time, exercise leads to an increase in the production of feel-good hormones which are also known as endorphins.
This overall results in better mental health and hence exercise are often recommended by doctors to counter depression, anxiety, stress, and other such mental health problems. It also results in better sleep and improvement in overall mood.
